Not all videogames arrive dubbed into Spanish. It depends on many factors, but above all the reception that the product will have in other regions. The latter occurs with many niche sagas that, despite their growth, still have a community of players very located outside the country of origin. We have seen recent cases such as Shenmue III or Fire Emblem Three Houses, and they are not the only ones. Sometimes it is a very personal decision of the developer studio that is reluctant to these modifications in the final product. Subtitle? Yes. But dubbing is a more sensitive issue for some studios like Rockstar.
The creators of GTA decided to keep the original version of Red Dead Redemption 2 and it is a trend in their work. Nothing to catch us off guard. This can create a barrier between the video game and players who don't have so much understanding with another language. And consequently, this absence can break the immersion that is presupposed in an interactive product like the video game. In Spain, the dubbing of video games has had ups and downs, but it was in 1999 when the activity was considered professionalized with The Longest Journey video game.
The dubbing in this sector slowed down a few years ago in terms of volume according to official data, but now it seems to resurface in our country with the consequent improvement in quality. We have seen public actors or characters behind a video game character like Elena Anaya in Call of Duty: Ghost, Christian Gálvez in Assassin's Creed Unity or the recent dubbing of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare with Najwa Nimri as Kate Laswell. But there are many voice actors we have heard many more times than we have seen on screen.
They work in the shade and often in very difficult conditions. Sometimes they work without any image and only with the original audio as a reference. Today we want to recognize their work remembering some of these professionals who have participated in many video games. And surely you have not noticed.
Salvador Serrano
Have you ever wondered who is behind the mask of Aku Aku? Believe it or not, it is Captain Qwart (Ratchet & Clank) or Marcus Kincaid, who you have seen in the Borderlands saga. Yes, all of them are played by Salvador Serrano, a dubbing actor with a long history in video games. He has given voice to very varied characters of games that have nothing to do. And in addition to the characters mentioned, lately you have been able to hear it in World of Warcraft: Battle of Azeroth as Admiral Daelin Brave, Assassin's Creed Origins (Set) or Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince.
Pedro Tena
Tena is another habitual one in the dubbing of the cinema and the video games. Sure it sounds to you the voice of Darth Vader or Mufasa, but in video games it takes time doing its magic. Share minutes with many other colleagues by profession that we barely put on when we play. It is the official voice of Roadhog (Overwatch) in Spanish, sharing games with Ramón Langa (Soldier 76), Laura Barriga (Mei), Carlos Ysbert (Torbjörn) and many others. It may be easier to recognize them when they have such an identified profile, but you can also listen to Pedro Tena in Mirror's Edge Catalyst (Birdman), Titanfall 2 (Major Eli Anderson), Far Cry 5 or the recently released Blacksad: Under the Skin, where he plays to Jake Ostiombe. And of course Darth Vader in Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order.
Juan Carlos Lozano
He is also part of the cast of Fallen Order and Far Cry 5. And even then most of the time he will not have coincided in the same room as his teammates. Often the voice actors have talked about the loneliness of this work, contrary to what it may seem. Juan Carlos Lozano has played very different characters as Horizon Zero Dawn or Septimus Resh in AC Origins
Inma Galician
It has been a very moving year for this dubbing actress. Surely you've heard it a thousand times in League of Legends because it is one of the most popular (and veteran) ADCs in the game. Indeed, Gallego gives voice to Miss Fortune, the bounty hunter with an ultimate fulminant. But wherever you look, you can find this actress because, like her classmates, she has participated in many video games: Wolfenstein, Fallout 3 (Betty), Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, Assassin's Crees III and an endless list. Lately you will have heard it with many characters in Fallen Order, the badly bad Annette Birkin of Resident Evil 2, Lilith in Borderlands 3 or Rikki Patel in Days Gone. Impossible to choose our favorite.
Rafael Azcarraga
Another veteran of video games. Azcárraga has been in this sector for more than twenty years and gave voice to Werner Von Croy, uncle of Lara Croft, in Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. No presentations are needed when talking about this actor, but we would like to remember some of his works such as Prey, Destiny 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Metro Exodus or World of Warcraft. Although today he is recognized by his role as Kratos in God of War
Claudio Serrano
Christian Bale's voice is not new to this either. It is clear that Batman has given him a lot, especially since Warner Bros. decided to unify all Dark Knight products. Since then, it is common to hear Claudio as Bruce Wayne or his alter ego in any superhero video game. The Arkham saga is also considered as the best Batman video games, but has also voiced the legendary Altaïr of Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Tommy in The Last of Us and recently the Days Gone protagonist, Deacon St. John.
White mary
No doubt everyone remembers Maria for giving voice to Ellie from The Last of Us. Share credits with Claudio Serrano and not only in this video game, but also in Days Gone. He also played Samantha in the reboot of Tomb Raider and the great Elizabeth of Bioshock, characters who have given him more than a name in video games. He also has interventions in sagas such as Batman Arkham, Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty. We remember her with special affection in the Spyro remake and recently she voiced Sonia Dunn, a character from Blacksad: Under the Skin. But we could continue listing their work and it would be done at night.
