Square Enix recently revealed the two paid expansions for FF16. But can we expect more big announcements? Legendary producer Naoki Yoshida gives his answer.
FF16 may not have shined at the 2023 Game Awards as much as one would have hoped, but at least it didn’t leave empty-handed. Of all the nominations, the PS5-exclusive action role-playing game won the award for “Best Original Soundtrack”. But as the evening progressed, the software was also thrust into the spotlight with the long-awaited reveal of two additional pieces of content. The start of something bigger?
Is this the beginning or the end of FF16?
After speculation, rumors and statements, the veil has been lifted on the FF16 DLC. Echoes of the Fallen is available on the PlayStation Store for $9.99 individually or via the expansion pass for $24.99. A bundle that also includes the second content The Rising Tide. But you have to wait until spring 2024 for the latter; there are currently no further details.
Does FF16 have a future beyond these two DLCs? Minor updates and additions are inevitable, but don’t expect more. Naoki Yoshida, FF14’s legendary producer, instead closed the door on a sequel or spin-off. So no FF16 Part 2 or Final Fantasy 16-2. « The team that developed the game no longer exists. Except for members assigned to the DLC. Therefore, we have no plans to make a sequel or spin-off of FF16 ». There are no problems, layoffs or anything like that, but the bulk of the troops have been redirected elsewhere. Yoshida-san is more motivated by the idea of producing something new, although he remains cautious about the title’s future.
We learned a lot with FF16. Instead of working on a game forever, we want to make the next one if possible or take on a new challenge. But if you ask me if there will be anything related to FF16 in the future, I don’t know. Since I don’t know what will happen, I prefer not to continue (laughs).

Not a sequel to Final Fantasy 16, but at least one new DLC
The paid DLCs for FF16 were the big awaited announcement and you can already enjoy them. As mentioned above, the Remanences of the Sky expansion is available on the PS Store, but be careful. You won’t be able to start it if you’re not far enough along in the main story. This content is only activated from the “Provenance” chapter onwards. And you must first have completed the optional “Snow White” quests.
As for the scenario that FF16 Echoes of the Fallen offers, here is what we learn from the PlayStation Store. “As the twilight of a gloomy sky fell over Valisthea, dark colored crystals appeared. Clive believes this discovery may indicate the presence of a previously unknown mother crystal. He and his faithful companions will follow the trail of these mysterious, shrouded crystals and meet strange traders, then chase them to an ancient celestial monument, the enigmatic Tower of the Sages…”
