Billionaire, Hedgehog, Stop

At 31, Sonic can boast of being a billionaire. The appetite for SEGA’s mascot continues, and the success is there.

We’ve never seen Sonic wear a Rolex on his wrist, but it might be. The hedgehog is literally drowning in the yen.

Sonic, a rich and always current mascot

Like Mario, Sonic has traversed the centuries with varying degrees of success and intends to turn his formula upside down by dabbling in the open world in Sonic Frontiers. It’s impossible to predict the success of this component or not, but the franchise is extremely lucrative for SEGA.

In its most recent financial report, SEGA Sammy Holdings reported that the license has sold more than 1.5 billion games worldwide (via gaming industry). All episodes combined, bringing together full price full titles but also free productions to play for free. It won’t stop as the Japanese publisher has big plans for its mascot.

By the end of fiscal year 2024 and beyond, several new projects will emerge with the goal “Boosting franchise popularity and helping sell more games”. When SEGA doesn’t explicitly mention them, we’re thinking of the various films that are part of the Sonic Cinematic Universe with a third feature film set to face Avatar 3. Sonic 2, the film, grossed $403.8 million at the worldwide box office, $97 million more than the first.

The hedgehog is also central to SEGA’s strategy of being “a video game marvel.”
