Clear, comebacks, winner

Wait a minute, you know two of them - and somehow the third one (on the right) too. Well, 2022 was the year of comebacks.

It’s a tradition that we let the GameStar community vote for the best games of the past year. And it’s just as tradition that The Witcher 3 always takes a top spot when the witcher RPG is somehow selectable. In 2019, for example, the Switch version won the trophy for the best role-playing game of the year.

Since then we have limited our choice to PC games, but the next-gen version of The Witcher 3 was released in 2022 – also for the PC.

In the podcast, Micha discusses what that means for your election result and what other games you have determined to be the best in class for 2022 with Géraldine “Oblivion is better” Hohmann and Manu Fritsch from the podcast veteran »Insert Moin«.

Plenty of surprises await us – including Manu, who mourns the absence of Marvel Snap and Tunic’s modest performance, for example. Need for Speed Unbound also takes a beating and doesn’t even make the top 40 – not a complete failure, but weak for a series that was once a community favorite at GameStar.

Our community favorites also include the Piranha Bytes games, but Elex 2 can’t assert itself in your vote for best role-playing game or best Europe game – the latter honor is due to an indie gem.

In general, you show a lot of love for indie games – okay, at least for certain indie games. Vampire Survivors and Stray, for example, stormed into the top field, while games like Tunic, Chained Echoes or Micha’s Story insider tip NORCO bobbed around or were even chosen by just one person (!).

The fact that many old PlayStation games that received a PC version last year are among the top performers in the election also speaks for the general blockbuster weakness of the game year 2022. Even up to second place – while first place naturally goes to the one expected winner.

No, it’s not The Witcher 3. Luckily.

Interessante Information: No cat meows at all in the podcast. The sound that throws Géraldine out of the concept escapes from Manu’s metal drinking bottle as it is screwed on. This in turn reminds us of our podcast on sound design.

The results of the election will also be available as an article next week, here are the top 25 for anyone who wants to spoil the podcast:
