Prime Video is preparing the return of an absolute cult film, but the feature’s new direction clearly risks dividing early fans.
Prime Video follows the trend of Netflix and Disney and produces its own programs. Sometimes they are real exclusive pieces, original creations from A to Z. But sometimes they are also remakes or reinterpretations of cult works. For example, we will soon be entitled to it Mr and Mrs Smith, a series that revisits the main storylines of the 90s television show with a touch of the film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. But this won’t be the only show that relies on nostalgia, as one of the next big films on the platform is none other than a remake of a cult film: Road House.
The remake of a cult film on Prime Video
It’s the end of the 80s and a certain Patrick Swayze has been on the big screen for some time. The man capsized many hearts with the cult Dirty dancing. And he didn’t know it at the time, but he would also be signing one of the most beautiful romantic films in the world: Spirit, starring Demi Moore, whose music still haunts those who saw it. But between the two there was another film, a little less well known but just as iconic: Road House. It’s the story of a somewhat lost man, whose past still haunts him, who finds a small job as a bouncer in a “quiet” area. Unfortunately, some bosses showed up on the first night and hurt him. Then he is looked after by a great young woman who also has some problems. A film that mixes action and romance, with a Swayze who this time doesn’t shy away from flexing his muscles.
So it is this film that will soon have the right to a remake on Prime Video from March. This time it’s Jake Gyllenhaal who’s at the helm (or bar) in what appears to be a fairly free-form reinterpretation of the original film. This new Road House will adopt the main lines of the original frame. We are once again faced with a confrontation between a man with a difficult past and a big local boss. But the action clearly seems to be the focus of the action and is even a bit more blockbuster than the ’89 film. A shift that is sure to make purists shudder. Even the idea of a remake is often difficult to sell. But twisting the original material makes it even harder to swallow.
Let’s not sell the bear’s skin and wait for its release. Road House will be released on Prime Video on March 21, 2024. The appointment has been agreed.
