Before Shrek, Puss in Boots or even the advent of 3D, DreamWorks had unveiled one of the most beautiful animated films… sadly little known.

Before DreamWorks’ golden age, there was The Road to Eldorado

While many agree that DreamWorks’ golden age came with the advent of three-dimensional animation, let’s not forget the studio’s early days. Before Shrek released the first name in 2001 we still had the rights to some classics, starting with The Prince of Egypt or even The Road to Eldorado. Also, today we decided to rehabilitate this sadly misunderstood film!

The Road to El Dorado has been cited as one of DreamWorks’ greatest disasters and was actually not profitable for the studio. To give you numbers, the title grossed just over $76 million while at least $95 million was expected to cover development costs. Of course, this mishap led to the cancellation of all the sequels that were in the pipeline.

Despite everything, The Road to Eldorado is a cult film that we can only recommend, especially since the film is currently available on Netflix!

The Road to Eldorado, a movie just for kids?

This story isn’t just any story, it’s that of two friends, Tulio and Miguel, or rather two crooks of Spanish origin who are willing to do anything to collect gold. So when they hear about a treasure map, they do whatever it takes to acquire it and begin their new adventure.

The strength of this film lies not only in this pronounced thirst for adventure, but also in the fact that it is not only aimed at children. As we said above, the two heroes are also two crooks. The latter, for the less immoral, are not afraid to lie in order to achieve their goal of stealing, not redistributing to the poor, but keeping everything for themselves. The film also doesn’t shy away from showing violent villains who aren’t afraid to splatter blood.

But ultimately, The Road to Eldorado is also one of the best movies about friendship. The two characters, voiced by José Garcia and Antoine de Caunes, are inseparable, natural and above all very well written. We can only believe in their relationship, in their stories that are often based on lies. The whole thing is accompanied by a soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and Zlton John, just that.
