A fan shares his opinion Metroid The game might look like it if it came out on the N64.
The Metroid series did have some 3D entries on the GameCube and Wii, but Nintendo did skip a generation in the transition from the SNES to the N64. But in the end one never actually released on the N64, so one fan and indie developer decided to make his own take on Metroid on the classic console.
Luto Akino is an indie game developer from Mexico who is currently working on various projects, but they also recently shared some gameplay for Metroid 64, a fan game that is definitely not made by Nintendo. The back environment definitely looks like it’s from an N64 game, and also suits the moody and scary atmosphere that’s common in the Metroid series.
It also sees Sams running, jumping and rolling around the place, although it’s only a small base position at the moment. The firing mechanic is also in place, which seems to have some sort of lockout, apparently necessary for consoles that only have one analog stick. This is a pretty cool early build for a potential N64 version of Metroid, so it might be worth keeping an eye on how it’s being developed.
A recent interview with series creator Yoshio Sakamoto did have him confirm that he was trying to figure out how to make a Metroid game for the N64, but it didn’t feel right. “I was actually thinking about the possibility of making a Metroid game for the N64, but I didn’t feel like I should be the one making the games,” Sakamoto said. “When I held the N64 controller in my hand, I couldn’t imagine how it would be used to move Samus. So it was too early for me to make a 3D Metroid myself.”
At least now Sakamoto doesn’t have to think about how to put Metroid on the N64.
