Grogu’s very personal (short) film
On November 12, 2022, without much warning and almost out of nowhere, Grogu and the Soot Men was released on Disney Plus. The minimalist project is a short anime that comes from the legendary Studio Ghibli, which is known for films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service or Spirited Away.
What is the Star Wars short film about? Grogu and the sooty men don’t actually tell a real story. In the hand-drawn four minutes, we see how Baby Yoda meets the eponymous Ghibli mascots and the l ittle creatures frolic with each other.
When naming the short film Zen
but that’s hardly surprising, because it reminds of that Zenimation
format from Disney: These are quite compact and almost minimalistic meditation films with a manageable plot and relaxing music.
One or the other fan might have hoped for a little more from the previously teased collaboration between Studio Ghibli and Lucasfilm. However, it cannot be ruled out that this is just a foretaste of something bigger. For example, it has already been rumored that Ghibli has a hand in the upcoming second season of Star Wars: Visions.
