The Silent Hill 2 remake has been hiding a secret that could be evidence of a theory fans have been holding on to for years.

Spoilers ahead!

One of the most interesting things about Silent Hill 2 is that it has multiple endings that all depend on the tiniest decisions you make during the game, but one thing fans were never really sure of Which ending is canon? In fact, Pyramid Head creator Masahiro Ito has even said before that every ending is canon, fueling a long-held fan theory: Silent Hill 2 actually is a time loop in which protagonist James Sunderland keeps reliving these same events as punishment for his treatment of his wife Mary. Now fans have discovered a secret message that some believe provides evidence for this theory.

In the game, you can collect 26 new photos added to the game, all of which show different parts of the town, as well as some strange information. This has confused fans for a while, but yesterday, Reddit user DaleRobinson cracked the code – “If you count what’s in each photo (e.g. open windows in photo 1 = 6),” the user explained, “Then count the numbers throughout the photo.” Write on each one and you’ll receive a letter. ” Dale Robinson did just that, and discovered that the photos spelled out the message: You’ve been here for two decades.

Bloober Team’s creative director and lead designer confirmed the claim on Twitter, writing on Twitter: “I knew it wouldn’t be hidden for long! (Our company has a theory that the puzzle might So hard) When I painted these pictures, I really wanted to make it subtle… I think now is the perfect time for you to address that! ”

It should be noted that this doesn’t technically fully confirm the theory, after all it’s probably a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that the game is twenty years old, but it seems clear that it’s a reference to the theory at least. When a fan commented that the loop theory was canon, Leinart did respond with “yeah?” so apparently it’s still up in the air, which is good news for some since not everyone is a fan of this theory (me includes itself in this category, not least because of its cynical commentary on the Brexit finale). It doesn’t matter if it’s canon or not, but it’s a fun little mystery that I’m sure a lot of fans will be happy to see solved.
