This film from a cult license from Capcom, which recently landed on Netlfix, is a hit, but still not brilliant.
Netflix loves to adapt the most iconic video game licenses, we know that. Castlevania, The Witcher, Onimusha, Far away (actually all Ubisoft licenses) … There are plenty of films and series on the platform. And this is without the many other similar programs that are constantly being added to the catalog. Like recently with a really big film from an absolute cult license from Capcom.
And no, it’s not Resident Evil, the series has suffered enough lately, don’t you think? Another big Capcom license is in the spotlight on Netflix this December: Monster hunter. Paul WS Anderson, already behind the camera in the film series resident Evil started in 2001 (that’s still a long way to go), took on a Capcom license again in 2021 and gave us his vision of the famous Monster Hunter franchise. We’re not going to lie, the result is clearly not on par.
Unable to recreate a complete fantastical universe, Anderson opted for the simple option and pitch for a TV movie. So we find ourselves in a commando of American soldiers who, during a routine operation, are teleported into a parallel universe full of giant monsters. So.
The camera only has eyes for the gorgeous Milla Jovovich, the poorly filmed slow motion shots are numerous and the costumes are shockingly tacky. The fact is that the creatures are honestly classy and Capcom’s character design is respected down to the smallest detail. Diablo, Rathalos and other iconic monsters from the series literally burst onto the screen. But other than that… the fact is that the film is currently a hit on Netflix. Monster Hunter was released on the platform on December 28th, joining the big year-end blockbuster Rebel Moon. Honest entertainment or, in the worst case scenario, a funny turnip, that’s what awaits you with this Monster Hunter.
