From time to time, Netflix offers nuggets and it seems that one of them is included in the streaming platform’s catalog for this summer.
Netflix is therefore enriching its animation catalog with The Imaginary, a hand-drawn animation film that explores the poetic world of imaginary friends. Directed by Yoshiyuki Momose and produced by the Ponac studio, known for works such as Modest Heroes and Mary and the Witch’s Flower, the film is based on the 2015 work of writer AF Harrold and artist Emily Gravett.
A moving film on Netflix
The Imaginary tells the story of Amanda and her imaginary companion Rudger, who no one else can see. The plot takes a turn when Rudger finds himself alone in the city, a place where abandoned imaginary friends face mysterious threats. Combining adventure and deep emotion, the film offers a reflection on friendship and isolation.
Before hitting Netflix on July 5, The Imaginary was shown in Japanese theaters, where it enjoyed modest success, grossing $919,000. The film premiered in Japan, receiving positive reviews for its artistic approach and innovative storytelling. Netflix should give it a nice boost. There’s almost a touch of Miyazaki about it.
The release of The Imaginary coincides with the presentation of Netflix’s animation offering during the Annecy Film Festival. With 130 million subscribers worldwide watching anime every month, Netflix continues to focus on the genre to attract a diverse and international audience.
