Another indie game is making big numbers on Steam. Again it’s about a cooperative horror trip. And again there is some movement in the weekly Steam bestsellers. The new surprise hit is called Content Warning, is actually an April Fool’s joke and focuses on a strange topic: Dangerous tests of courage for internet fame.

Disclaimer: We list the following below ten top-grossing games on Steam last week and address relevant developments. The basic information is based on data from SteamDB and are read directly from Steam.

The co-op game Content Warning is an extremely successful April Fool’s joke

Developers often put a lot of effort into April Fools’ jokes. This year Bohemia Interactive introduced a mod in which we can play as little plastic soldiers in Arma Reforger. Publisher Landfall goes one step further and simply publishes full-fledged games as an April Fool’s joke, which, as in the case of Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, can even achieve some success.

This prank has now succeeded again, with content warning. In co-op with friends, we go into spooky buildings armed with handheld cameras and try to get spectacular shots for ours SpöökTube-Account to make. So it’s a matter of taking on monsters, going through tests of courage and, ideally, not suffering any spontaneous failure to exist. Afterwards we can marvel at our fame on the Internet and buy new upgrades with the money we earn.

The result: Fifth place in the Steam top sellers and over 200,000 simultaneously active players at peak times. It may have helped that Content Warning was completely free to play for a while. There are currently still around 25,000 active users.

Co-op games are very popular on Steam. Our editor Peter is pretty sure that Jump Ship can become the next hype:
