If you thought that the numerous announcements during the Summer Game Fest were the only special feature of this evening, you are wrong. Because today there was also a new film in the “Lord of the Rings” universe announced!
New film next to the Amazon series: This is of course not the only current project based on the novels of the author JRR Tolkien. Amazon is currently working on a new TV series that is reported to cost up to $ 465 million. A look into Middle-earth’s past
What is it about? The film is entitled “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” and takes place long before the popular trilogy about Sauron and the One Ring. More precisely, it goes 250 years into the past – long before the adventures of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.
Who is performing? The central character of the plot will be Helm Hammerhand, the king of Rohan and namesake of the famous fortress of the horse people, which is attacked by the Uruk-Hai in “The Two Towers”. However, it is not yet known exactly what it will be about.
Many open questions: Not only details about the story are few and far between. At the moment we don’t know when the film will start in the (Europe) cinemas or which actors are actually involved in the project. There are currently no first pictures or even a trailer for The War of the Rohirrim.
Animated film instead of live action: This is not a real film, but an animated strip. The Japanese is responsible for the implementation Kenji Kamiyamawho was most recently involved in the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Peter Jackson, the director of the film trilogy, should not be involved in the project.
Who else is involved? Neben Kenfi Kamiyama (Eden of the East, Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society) als Regisseur sind Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews responsible for the script. The two were already working together on the critically acclaimed Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Era of Resistance. Philippa Boyens is also involved as a co-writer on Peter Jackson’s film trilogy.

TV series for Amazon Prime Video: As already mentioned at the beginning, there is not only a new movie set in the universe of The Lord of the Rings. Amazon is developing a TV series that takes place approximately 3,000 years before the events of The Hobbit and the trilogy that followed. Meanwhile there are first details about the plot and cast, but no start date yet.
Game about Gollum by Daedalic: The developers of the Europe studio Daedalic are currently working on a stealth game that focuses entirely on the tragic figure Gollum. Amazon’s planned MMO has been discontinued: Meanwhile, Amazon worked alongside Crucible and The New World on an MMO based on the works of JRR Tolkien. However, the game was surprisingly discontinued in April 2021 after two years of development. We have already summarized all information about the Lord of the Rings MMO and its setting for you.
