A new Street Fighter movie is in the works at Legendary Entertainment, the studio behind Detective Pikachu, Pacific Rim, Godzilla vs. Kong, and more.
This message comes from Official Street Fighter Twitter accountThe response was mixed, from the hype of fighting game fans and influencers to the horror of adults who saw the terrible 1994 film.
No word on who is working on it, nor on the director, writer, etc. However, Legendary has some great games, some of which will thrill video game fans. After all, Detective Pikachu is a surprisingly good movie for kids and adults alike.
You have to wonder what kind of audience Legendary and Capcom are targeting with this movie. Forgive me, Street Fighter is usually an older IP. While Pokemon has a childlike appeal, I doubt that Zoomer knows much about Street Fighter other than Ryu and Chun Li popping up in Fortnite not long ago. Maybe the movie will try to address that, or maybe we’ll get something aimed at an adult audience like the recent Mortal Kombat movies.
While we’re on the subject, this really is a big time for video game movie adaptations, right? Not only has the Mario movie just come out and is good, we’ve also seen that the recent success of the Sonic movie seems to have inspired other IP holders to bring their games to the big screen.
Let us know if you’d like to see a new Street Fighter movie in the future? Also, do you think it’s possible for them to top the awesome Chun Li x Vega fight in the Street Fighter 2 animated movie? This is a big question!
