While we wait for the next Sonic game to come to us on all platforms on October 25th, SEGA is treating fans to a nice free surprise that’s worth the detour.
The blue hedgehog is in great shape at the moment, between this month’s release of Sonic x Shadow Generations and a third film, also featuring his enemy brother, which hits theaters on December 25th. To build excitement for its next game, SEGA is combining the best of both worlds with a high-quality animated miniseries that can be viewed for free on its mascot’s official YouTube channel.
A free prequel released before the release of Sonic x Shadow
As a reminder, Sonic x Shadow Generations is intended to be a recent update to the excellent 2011 title of the same name, mixing retro and modern versions of the famous blue hedgehog. As the name suggests, the title also takes the opportunity to bring the charismatic Shadow back to the fore with new, special levels. Sonic’s rival would almost steal the spotlight as he will also be the focus of the next film, played by none other than Keanu Reeves. Note that scenes from the upcoming film will also be integrated into the game.
While fans on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch wait for October 25th, they can currently watch a prologue to Sonic x Shadow Generations for free on the blue hedgehog’s official YouTube channel. It is an animated mini-series in three episodes of around six minutes each. The first two episodes are already available, the last one will be released on October 10th.
Despite its free-to-play nature, this prologue to Sonic x Shadow Generations is very solid. Both in terms of animation and art direction, fans of the famous franchise seem to really appreciate SEGA’s initiative. The prequel also allows us to give depth to a shadow that has always been in a precarious balance between good and evil. You can watch the first episode below and the rest on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube channel while you wait for the conclusion of the prologue, scheduled for October 10th.
