After a truck collision accident, Sarah breaks her leg and Joel has to carry her. Together they get reach the bridge that leads to the exit of the city, but one of the guards who patrol the area stops them and receives the order to kill them. Joel and Tess begin to understand why the girl is vitally important to Fireflies. Along the way they have to face numerous infected and in one of those confrontations, Tess ends up being bitten, something that does not reveal until reaching its destination. The group that was supposed to pick up Ellie has been eliminated and the army is headed there, so Joel's partner decides sacrifice to give them time, aware of the destiny that awaits them. However, the path is not easy at all and along the way they are attacked by numerous groups of humans and infected. In one of those confrontation, Younger brother Sam ends up bitten and becomes infected. Henry is forced to kill him when he attacks Ellie and subsequently commits suicide.
Following this tragic episode, Joel and Ellie continue their solo journey to the prey Tommy lives in so that he can offer them the information on the Fireflies they are looking for.
