So much so that even without having reached the market it is already postulated as a huge candidate to be the best game of 2020.

Joel and his tragic loss to define his personality
The story of the first The Last of Us kicks off featuring Joel and Sarah, his daughter. The two live together, without giving a single detail about the girl's mother. Offering an iron relationship between the two, the gameplay begins by managing the young woman, who wakes up with a call from her uncle Tommy, Joel's brother, asking if they are okay. Sarah gets up in search of Joel, without finding him all over the house, until she discovers him entering the office and protecting himself from someone who is chasing him. According to his father, people are being victim of a kind of disease. After that, one of the people affected by this strange phenomenon breaks into the house, so Joel is forced to shoot him.
After that, Tommy arrives with his car and together they try escape from the city. Not surprisingly, everyone comes up with the same idea, causing major traffic jams and the family is forced to look for an alternative. After a truck collision accident, Sarah breaks her leg and Joel has to carry her. Together they get reach the bridge that leads to the exit of the city, but one of the guards who patrol the area stops them and receives the order to kill them. When he shoots, Joel tries to protect Sarah, but the two fall to the ground from the impact of the bullets. When the guard is about to kill him, Tommy comes to his rescue, shooting him in the head. However, both repair that the shots have hit Sarah, who dies in his father's arms.
With this act a 20-year time jump, which explains that the infection has been caused by a fungus called cordyceps for which no cure has been found in more than two decades, while society has been divided in relation to survivors who have not been infected. The military controls they are especially iron and restrictive, while a group of rebels rise up with the name of the Fireflies with the intention of returning the light to the world and untying the chains of military oppression. Joel, to survive and get ration cards, becomes a mercenary able to do anything for subsistence. This is how he begins to work with his partner Tess, demonstrating a radical personality change, affected by Sarah's tragic death.
Ellie's appearance and the journey to salvation
It is with this type of work where Ellie comes into play in the proposal. Tess is assaulted by some of the men in Robert, one of the men for whom they have done the odd job, in an assault. Apparently their intention is to end Tess and Joel herself, so they both embark on their quest to remove it before it serves its purpose. They end up finding him and asking him for the weapons that he had stolen from them, unfriendly, until he claims to have sold them to the Fireflies. He proposes a deal to his two captors: wipe out the fireflies and retrieve the loot. Obviously it's rejected and Robert ends up dead.
At that moment it appears Marlene, wounded, who was precisely looking for Robert. In theory, it seems that he would be the recipient of the task that he entrusts to Joel and Tess, but after his death it is impossible for him to complete it. Tess requests the return of the weapons, but the leader of the Fireflies demands something in return, since she had paid Robert for those weapons. The mission they must fulfill is get something out of town, who finally turns out to be someone and is precisely young Ellie. Apparently it hides a secret of great importance and must be transferred to the town hall, something to which the mercenaries reluctantly accept, knowing that the material they will receive in return is of enormous quality.
The journey is fraught with danger and in the company of Ellie, they head towards the town hall. Shortly after, they are detained by a patrol, who test them to see if they are infected, although they manage to get rid of them. However, Ellie's test is positive, revealing the bite that he had suffered three weeks ago, which gives him the condition of immune. Joel and Tess begin to understand why the girl is vitally important to Fireflies. Along the way they have to face numerous infected and in one of those confrontations, Tess ends up being bitten, something that does not reveal until reaching its destination. The group that was supposed to pick up Ellie has been eliminated and the army is headed there, so Joel's partner decides sacrifice to give them time, aware of the destiny that awaits them. They both get to smash the army and try to get information about Fireflies thanks to Tommy, reason why they are forced to look for a vehicle.
Bill City and the Road to Pittsburgh
With a somewhat strained relationship, Joel and Ellie start the path to bill city, an old acquaintance who owes him favors, hoping that he will have a car to get to the place where Tommy resides. The first contact with the aforementioned is not very friendly, as it has a serious run-in with Ellie and his character, but he finally agrees to help them get out of the city, with the intention of pay off your debt once and for all. After entering the institute and even facing a bloated, a very advanced phase of the infection, they finally discover that the battery operational of one of the cars had already been stolen by Bill's ex-partner.
Fleeing from the infected, they finally reach the house of that person, who had hanged himself to avoid conversion. In the garage the car is parked with the battery that Joel and Ellie need, which they get tear it off and hit the road, leaving Bill behind in his city and with the debt paid. On the way to Tommy Dam, they are forced to make a stop at Pittsburgh, place occupied by a group of scavengers that they intend to kill them and steal everything they have on them, causing an accident and rendering the car unusable. Joel and Ellie are forced to fight for their lives again, confronting the group of scavengers and advancing with the intention of reach the outer bridge from the city to continue on his way.
The relationship between both characters is going fortifying Little by little, due to the need to travel together and cover their backs. The stage in Pittsburgh serves to demonstrate Ellie's worth also in combat, especially after saving Joel from almost certain death, using a weapon to eliminate his enemy. From this stage is where you can also see the humor that Ellie has, as she begins to use her identifying joke book that gives the grace note in a dark environment and between a society distorted.
Henry, Sam and Tommy's introduction to give depth
It is in these moments when two allies of the most important appear and that also mark the path of Joel and Ellie in their first adventure: Sam and Henry. Two brothers who survive all threats with the intention of leaving Pittsburgh with the plan of the two protagonists: through the bridge on the outskirts of the city. To do this, they plan to attack during the changing of the guard of the vigilantes, although the plan does not go as expected and they are discovered, having to flee. In this chase, one of the stairs that Henry, Sam and Ellie accessed was broken before Joel can climb. Given the proximity of the guards and the intention of saving his younger brother, Henry decides to leave, abandoning Joel to his fate, while Ellie decides to accompany him. "We stay together"says the young woman.
After a spectacular flight, both are forced to jump into the river to survive, even though Ellie doesn't know how to swim. Joel, in his eagerness to protect her, ends up hitting himself with a rock on the head and losing consciousness. When he wakes up, he meets the young woman accompanied by the brothers who abandoned them to their fate and begins to beat up Henry, although he finally comes to his senses when they explain that they have been saved from dying by the current. From that moment, they undertake a joint journey to reach their destination: a radio tower where they will send a rescue signal. However, the path is not easy at all and along the way they are attacked by numerous groups of humans and infected. In one of those confrontation, Younger brother Sam ends up bitten and becomes infected. Henry is forced to kill him when he attacks Ellie and subsequently commits suicide.
Following this tragic episode, Joel and Ellie continue their solo journey to the prey Tommy lives in so that he can offer them the information on the Fireflies they are looking for. Upon arrival, they receive them themselves Tommy and Maria, his wife, before the brothers face up to mistakes they made in the past. However, Tommy agrees to give him the information, ensuring that his last location was in eastern university colorado. Is there when Joel asks him to take care of Ellie himself up there, because he doesn't want to continue with the "work". Tommy refuses and they end up facing, but the prey is attacked by scavengers that they have to eliminate. After the fray, Joel's brother agrees to move Ellie and she, being aware of Joel's plans, run away with a horse towards a solitary cabin.
Joel and Tommy launch into their search and upon locating her, the two protagonists have a conversation in which Ellie reveals that she knows the truth of what happened to Sarah, while he continues in his firm idea of separating. However, at the last moment he regrets and asks Tommy for the location of the university, to be the one in charge of accompanying the young woman to her destination. It is here when the ties of the characters finish joining to make up one of the most special relationships from the whole history of video games.
Come on Big Horns! and the start of the climax in the winter
The stage of the university mixes elements of calm and intense action that anticipate the climax of the story. When they arrive on horseback, they can see some of the most beautiful scenarios of the proposal, but then everything darkens to anticipate what lies ahead. There is no sign of Fireflies in college, but Joel and Ellie do. find documents to confirm that they were there, although they eventually moved to the salt lake city hospital. Therefore, they both prepare to set out, at least until they are attacked by a group of scavengers and Joel ends up seriously wounded, when being crossed by an iron in a strong fall.
Ellie has to take care of the rest of the scavengers and barely get Joel there, demonstrating a enormous courage and skill. All with the promise that, when that journey ends, Joel will sing for her, of course. Finally, a temporary leap is made until winter is reached, although in the Left Behind DLC you can learn more about this transitional process, in which Ellie is looking for medicine to take care of Joel and save his life, while sheltering him in a nearby garage. In one of her food hunting games, the young woman manages to kill a deer with her bow, although she also meets someone who has followed in the animal's footsteps. Reveals that his name is David and that he can offer you a deal in exchange for sharing the meat. Although she is suspicious, she finally accepts.
Shortly after, it is discovered that this David and his companion are two scavengers who have been following his lead, since they were responsible for the death of some of his companions. Despite this, they allow Ellie to leave with the medicines she needs to administer to Joel, although everything is part of a trapThey follow in his footsteps and discover his location. The young woman is forced to flee to get them away from the badly injured Joel, being finally captured and locked up. As David explains his plans to kill her, Ellie manages to run away and she is chased by her captor and several of her companions, while Joel manages to wake up and launches his search, reaching torture one of his enemies to tell him where the girl was taken.
In her attempt to leave the site, Ellie ends up locked in a burning restaurant with David, being about to escape, but is finally handcuffed by the scavenger and they begin a struggle that almost ends the life of the young protagonist. At least until he manages to reach a gun and kill him with tremendous rage, demonstrating the hard moments he had been going through. In those moments, Joel arrives and both share one of the most tender moments of the entire title, demonstrating the excellent chemistry between them and the darling they've forged with a path full of obstacles.
Salt Lake City and the conclusion of the trip
Once the winter is over, they get to Salt Lake City. On the way to the hospital, they discover how fauna has also entered the cities, stopping to observe a group of giraffes that roam freely between buildings and cars. At those moments, Joel asks Ellie that they can find another way, who does not have to face being responsible for saving humanity and who can live comfortably in Tommy's dam. However, the young woman refuses, ensuring that all the way they have traveled there it can't be at all.
When they are about to arrive at the hospital, Ellie has an accident and is about to drown. Joel manages to rescue her, but when he goes to do the breathing technique, he is hit by one of the Fireflies and they are both transferred to hospital. Upon waking, he meets Marlene, who explains that the goal is accomplished, that Ellie is about to be intervened and that his men will let him go with the agreed payment for the job. However, Joel is not convinced that the leader of the Fireflies is willing to sacrifice the young woman to find the cure for humanity. Marlene insists that it is the only way out and Joel decides to face the few remaining Fireflies to rescue ellie.
Finally he succeeds, although on the run from the building, he runs into Marlene again, who asks her to reconsider, as she is condemning humanity to a life without hope. Joel decides shoot it and finish it off when she is badly injured on the ground, taking Ellie in one of the cars that are in the hospital garage. When the young woman wakes up, he asks him what has happened and he decides to lie: She explains that there are more immune people like her and that the results when trying to find a cure have been unsuccessful, so they finally let them go.
A few days later, they both embark on an excursion so that Ellie can get to know the outside world better, although there is something that does not stop haunting her mind. That's when he explains what happened when Riley and she were bitten and the sorrow that afflicts her for everyone who died on the way. He makes Joel swear that the story he told him was true, so that he didn't have to feel sorry for not having fulfilled his mission. Joel reaffirms his lie, swearing that everything is true, which is the end of the story of the first game.
Probably, Joel's lie has its influence at some point in the history of The Last of Us Part II, so we will have to be very attentive to next May 29, at which time the proposal will land on PlayStation 4. What it is clear is that will not leave anyone indifferent and who will present a story with different moral nuances that will reach the hearts of the players, just as the story you just read did at the time.
