A new free tool for Unreal Engine has just been released and it’s absolutely incredible. It radically changes every game, which is honestly impressive.
The virtual reality scene on PC began 2024 with a major breakthrough: the public beta release of the UEVR project, designed by modder Praydog. The latter is known for having already brought VR compatibility to all games that use the RE Engine thanks to its REFramework. But this time it allows us to go even further. It’s just amazing. And it affects the Unreal Engine.
With the Unreal Engine, virtual reality takes a new step
UEVR therefore makes it possible to make all Unreal games VR compatible. It is estimated that around eleven thousand Unreal Engine-based games are only available on Steam, not counting those on other platforms such as Itch.io. The UEVR framework provides rich features for VR, such as: B. full 6DOF (6 degrees of freedom) head tracking, automatic handling of in-game user interfaces, three different rendering methods (Native Stereo, Synchronized Sequential and Alternating/AFR), a system of plugins that allow modders to add even m ore features , either via C++ programming or via the Unreal Engine 4 Blueprint. In short, it is extremely complete.
While games should at least run fine in VR, that doesn’t mean they’re all perfect for this format. The tool supports Unreal Engine 4.8 to Unreal Engine 5.3. The Flat2VR community has also tested these games and created a table listing them. Additionally, UEVR allows the community to configure profiles optimized for specific games, which it has already done for several titles such as Returnal, RoboQuest, Trepang2, Aliens: Fireteam Elite and others.
Just breathtaking
To use the UEVR mod downloaded from Github, you need to start the game, go to UEVR, select the game from the list of running processes, choose between OpenVR and OpenXR (the first for SteamVR headsets, the second for Quest headsets ) and press Start and return to the game. It is also possible to adjust additional settings via the menu to optimize the experience.
Although this huge modding project is still in beta and may have some issues, the Flat2VR Discord community is very active in offering help. Still, UEVR represents a significant step forward for VR gamers on PC, allowing you to enjoy a variety of titles in virtual reality.
