Game fairs such as gamescom or promotional events organized by the game manufacturers themselves are often the meeting place for video game fans and cosplayers. These are characterized by crowds of people, long queues and photo sessions in the middle, but there is no real authentic feeling.
This weekend, however, a very special meeting took place that Fallout: New Vegas lovers themselves put together. The location for the spectacle was not just any exhibition hall, but a small town in the middle of the Nevada desert.

Fans breathe nuclear life into Goodsprings
“City” is a big word for the small place. In 2020, just 162 people lived in Goodsprings and the former mining town looks like it was stolen from a western. Although it is so inconspicuous, it has enjoyed special fame for around 14 years, as Goodsprings is an important location in Fallout: New Vegas. Fans of Obsidian’s role-playing game have been meeting here since 2022, to celebrate the »Fallout: New Vegas Festival«.

Crowds of cosplayers and onlookers gathered again this year on November 16th and 17th. Not only did they have fun with Nuka Cola and mole rat stew in the Pioneer Saloon, but they even recreated some epic battles from the Fallout universe. For example, a battle between the New California Republic and Caesar’s Legion:

Not quite as accurate in terms of game history, but no less lovingly, this brave group brought the flag of Petoria from an episode of Family Guy to Goodsprings. In a well-known episode of the series, Peter Griffin declared his property a separate nation, Petoria. Their flag has now found a new home in the desert city.

In New Vegas, Goodsprings, like its model, is a former mining town in which only a handful of people still live in the year 2281, giving it the reputation of a ghost town.
At the beginning of the game you wake up in this very town after being shot as a courier in the local cemetery. For many, Goodsprings is the beginning of an unforgettable journey and continues to bring the community together 14 years after the release of New Vegas.
