Last night, the first season of “Diablo 4” officially kicked off around the world. Season of the Wicked is an event that many Diablo 4 fans have been looking forward to, but the overwhelmingly negative response to the preseason patch might lead you to believe that turnout will be low.
Whether the people complaining were stuck in their own bubble, or the game’s servers just had unfortunate issues at launch, the result was the same: Most people couldn’t play the game when the season went live.
The two most common issues are long wait times to get into games and random disconnections. Long queue times are exacerbated by the absence of a countdown timer or any indication of how far players are in the queue, or how long they’ll have to wait to get in.
“In line for game start, start game TBD” was the message everyone was staring at last night. In fact, if you happen to check out Diablo 4 on Twitch, you’ll see that most live content creators are sitting in chairs looking at the screen, waiting for the servers to let them in.
The problem eased after about an hour when the game started showing an actual The wait time may be as long as 40 seconds. I watched it myself for 15-20 minutes, and one disconnection kept me waiting for 35 minutes.

Server overloads have also caused some cross-region disconnects and in-game rubberbanding/traversal issues, which are especially frustrating when happening in the new seasonal questline dungeons, as it means having to travel long distances from the town you spawn in each time, let alone repeat the entire dungeon.
Blizzard quickly acknowledged the issue (which affected both sides) America also Europe), indicating that the cause is being investigated. However, queue times eventually dropped, but Blizzard provided no update on why, or whether the issue has been permanently resolved.
As of this writing, you’ll have no trouble playing Diablo 4 for extended periods of time, so expect that to remain the case for the rest of the day and weekend. If you couldn’t log yourself in last night, you should definitely take this step before starting a new seasonal character.
