James Gunn has sealed his departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Not because the film was poorly received by audiences (click here for our film review) or that Box office results didn’t fit, but because at that point he was already confirmed as the new creative director at DC’s competitor.
Nevertheless, he has a very specific wish for how things should continue with the Guardians of the Galaxy in the future. Whether Marvel will listen to him is, of course, a completely different matter, but we’ll take a look at his idea anyway.
The new Guardians should continue
Before we get started, we would like to take this point send at least a small spoiler warning in advance: If you haven’t seen GotG Vol. 3 yet, it’s inevitable that you will now learn some important plot points if you continue reading. The film is now also available on Disney Plus, so if you have a subscription you could easily watch the film:

James Gunn was on the social network Threads was bombarded with questions from fans and as usual for the director, he took the time to answer as many of them as possible. Two pieces of feedback from him were of particular interest, namely the following questions:
What is his relationship like in his new position with MCU mastermind Kevin Feige?
Should Marvel continue Guardians of the Galaxy, who does Gunn think should direct it?
Let’s keep the first question brief: Kevin and I get along very well.
No wonder, even if there was a disagreement between the two men, it probably wouldn’t be made public.
More interesting is his answer to the Guardians question:
Even if some characters don’t return, I would be happy to see GotG continue with the current members, and I trust that Kevin is the right person for that [die Regie] will select.
In plain language this means (do you remember the spoiler warning earlier?): James Gunn wants Marvel to continue with the new line-up of Guardians of the Galaxy established at the end of the third film. As is well known, it consists of:
- The new old member Rocket as leader (voiced by Bradley Cooper)
- Kraglin (Sean Gunn)
- Adam Warlock (Will Poulter)
- A more than fully grown Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel)
- The dog Cosmo (voiced by Maria Bakalova)
- Phyla-Vell (Kai Zen)
A comparison with the comics shows: All of the new members, with the exception of Kraglin, had previously been members of the Guardians at various times, but never at the same time. So it’s quite possible that Marvel would like to make this new group constellation palatable to those familiar with the original with future films.
Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) will also return. That’s not what we’re saying, that’s what the post-credit scene of GotG Vol. 3 claims, which announces with a caption: The legendary Star-Lord will return
. In what role Peter will be seen, whether as a member of the Guardians or rather as external Consulant
but is unclear.
However, this has not yet been confirmed. There is currently no official information about the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, you can find out what we already know about the future of the superhero universe here:
Would you be happy about a continuation of the Guardians of the Galaxy with the new composition or was the last appearance of the old group also your farewell to this part of the MCU? What do you hope for the future of superhero films in general? Are you looking forward to James Gunn’s DC projects? Feel free to write it to us in the comments!
