There is a good atmosphere among Anno fans! Pax Romana is met with great enthusiasm.
The question of the setting of the next Anno has been on the minds of fans of the series ever since Anno 1800 was released. After all, the choice of historical era plays a large part in determining who feels comfortable here and who would rather skip the next spin-off.
Since June 10, 2024, we know that the game will be set in ancient Rome. Anno 117: Pax Romana is set to continue the series and will be set before the Middle Ages for the first time ever. Information about Anno 117 is currently still scarce, although we were able to find out a lot more from the developers in the interview.

Anno 117: Heiko, Géraldine and Fabiano analyze all exclusive information from the developers
But even without gameplay, the announcement is creating a good atmosphere in the community! We asked you if you were happy with it and the answer was a resounding And!
The Roman setting fits
The ancient world is definitely one of the most requested eras, the developers told us that. They were obviously not mistaken, because in our survey most of you are very happy with this choice.
Well over half are currently looking forward to Anno 117 and have been wanting exactly that setting. And even if it is perhaps not your favorite setting, the mood in our community at least is overwhelmingly positive. But that is no great surprise considering the success of Anno 1800. Here are a few voices from the community:
Under the big preview, GameStar user tacSTAR writes:
Simply awesome. Exactly my setting. I’m extremely happy!
Swooshbuckle also thinks the choice of setting is a good one and also describes why he sees a lot of potential in it for Anno:
A very interesting choice of setting that really has a lot of potential. Rome was culturally very diverse and was very involved with its neighbors both economically and in terms of war. The announcement text suggests that we will probably encounter more than just one culture, ie we can most likely look forward to Europeic tribes, Celts, Egyptians, Greeks and Jews, which in turn means that we can expect a fairly complex economic system that is based largely on trade.
Only two percent of all votes are clearly negative towards Anno 117. However, 16 percent are still skeptical and are not yet convinced, based on the setting alone, that Ubisoft will hit the jackpot again.
The user Jadekristall explains his disinterest in the new Anno as follows:
Leaves me completely cold. Wrong time and wrong cultural background for me. With Rome, a “discovery” game like Anno makes no sense. Why not earlier Greece? They founded colonies all over the Mediterranean, etc. That would have been a much better fit.
Could it have been any better?
Even though many people are very happy about the new setting, according to an earlier survey, there could have been even better ones. At least, that’s what a survey evaluation from February 6, 2021 showed.
Back then, our suggestion for the Roman Empire, called Anno 09, came in third place. The ideas for Anno 900 (Vikings) and Anno 1926 (the golden twenties) were more popular. Have you changed your mind since then or would you have been even happier with Vikings or the twenties? Write it in the comments!
