After Final Fantasy 7: Remae and Rebirth, fans want a remake of other Square Enix titles. However, this request may be impossible.
Final Fantasy is a license that delights many players with more than fifteen numbered games and numerous spin-offs. Nowadays the trend is towards remakes, as we can see in Square Enix’s work on the trilogy, the second installment of which is FF7 Rebirth, which delighted the community by offering improved graphics and a retelling of the story without completely distorting the original . With such success, it would be surprising if the studio stopped. There is no lack of player expectations. They want a return of FF6, FF8 or even FF10, which are still very popular, but also other titles that are a little more isolated. However, Square Enix has to do its part to achieve this.
The perfect game to wait for Final Fantasy Tactics
Although the saga is best known for its main titles, it has had the right to numerous spin-offs. Among them we find Final Fantasy Tactics, released on PlayStation and directed by Yasumi Matsuno. We also owe the very good Tactics Ogre to this talented developer. If you are paying attention, you will have already noticed a similarity between these two titles: they are two “tactical”. In case you don’t know, it’s a genre that requires the player to make tactical decisions during combat, similar to a game of chess. Like all apps, these apps also have their own community that would love to see them again thanks to a remake. That being said, it’s almost impossible for Matsuno as the T-RPG market is too small for Square Enix to greenlight a possible Final Fantasy Tactics.
As Yasumi Matsuno explains on X, Square Enix doesn’t seem interested in remaking a tactics game, even with the Final Fantasy license. This is nothing new: since the early 2000s, many developers noticed that as the turn-based system became less and less popular, it was becoming more and more complicated to offer them. “For publishers, anything that uses turn-based mechanics is considered too specialized. Even RTS games are now considered niche games
A remaster would have been leaked
Returning to Matsuno, he regrets this situation, but invites his fans to turn to the games “of the present” to compensate for the current lack of a Final Fantasy Tactics remake. He even makes suggestions: “How about you try playing Unicorn Overlord first? I pray sales exceed 1 million units sold
Square Enix, on the other hand, still has something in the pipeline. The famous Nvidia leak of 2021, which revealed the names of many games announced or released since then, actually mentioned a specific Final Fantasy Tactics Remastered. All hope does not seem to be lost, but fans of the genre still have to be patient. An FF9 remake was also part of the long list. This would be a 2.5 HD version like Ocotpath Traveler can offer. Again, we don’t have an official announcement yet.
