Aemond Targaryen acquired his dragon Vhagar in an unusual way. He was not chosen by her as a small child, but tamed her later, after the death of her previous rider. But that is not the most unusual part of their relationship.
In an interview with Filmstarts, Aemond actor Ewan Mitchell revealed why his character in the massive creature a kind of mother substitute If you want to know why Matt Smith likes playing his cruel character Daemon so much, visit your colleagues directly.
Aemond’s longing for motherly love
Mitchell said he was asked if Aemond had a mother complex. He would neither confirm nor deny that, but explained:
I don’t know if he has a mother complex or if he just wants to be loved more by his mother. Even though he is the second son, he wants to be treated like the first. He never really experienced this love, this unconditional love, as a child. And so he had to find a surrogate, so to speak. And maybe he found that in Vhagar, an older lady.
»Elderly lady« is a pretty nice description for the biggest and most brutal dragons of the House of the Dragon erawho is already responsible for several prominent deaths in the series. Aemond does not always have full control of his mount, as was shown at the end of season 1, for example.

According to Mitchell, rider and dragon complement each other quite well, and she is a visible extension of his inner drive. George RR Martin will reveal more about the dragons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon in The Winds of Winter – the penultimate book of A Song of Ice and Fire, which fans have been waiting for for 13 years.
House of the Dragon is currently in its second season, with the finale set to air on August 4, 2024. A third season has already been officially announced, but there is no release date yet.

A little more in-depth lore about Vhagar (without spoilers for the series): She is well over 100 years old, her first rider was Queen Visenya Targaryen, one of the sister-wives of Aegon the Conqueror. This also means that she went to war with the greatest known dragon of all time, Balerion. So she is accordingly experienced and battle-hardened.
