News culture After 14 years of waiting, it’s official: This iconic SF saga will continue in theaters with a new film
The time has come, it’s clear: filming for the new work in the cult Tron saga has just begun. This new installment, directed by Jared Leto and still very mysterious, has just been teased by its director.
On the Grid, 14 years later
This time it’s the right thing! While filming was postponed due to the Hollywood strike, Tron: Ares is finally back on track, as director Joachim Rønning revealed with a simple photo shared on Instagram. This new installment of the cult sci-fi saga Tron has been in development since 2015 and has encountered many difficulties so far, but filming has finally begun.
This new feature film stars Jared Leto, who plays the title role. He is joined by Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Evan Peters and Cameron Monaghan. Finally, Gillian Anderson has just been announced for casting. And for now, that’s pretty much all we know about this very mysterious project. Tron: Ares was supposed to tell us the story of the eponymous character who goes from the world of video games to reality. And the film wouldn’t be a direct sequel to Tron and Tron: Legacy.
Towards an expanded Tron universe?
If “Tron: Ares” has the same name as the 1982 cult film, this new feature film should begin a new story in the Grid universe. Jeff Bridges and Garrett Hedlund, the two leads from the previous two films, are among the notable absences from this third project. As a reminder, Tron originally told the story of Kevin Flynn, a video game developer who found himself invested in his creation. 29 years later, Sam Flynn, Kevin’s son, appeared in the film Tron: Legacy, searching for his missing father. This time we should be treated to a completely different story. The date is currently set for 2025. Sequel follows.
