Almost four years ago, WhatsApp removed a feature that was very popular with many. Now, according to a leak, it could be making an unexpected comeback.
In December 2019, WhatsApp banned the sending of newsletters via Messenger. Now the function is apparently about to make a comeback.
The fan blog WABetaInfo claims to have found references to a function called “Newsletter” in the beta version 2.23.5.3 of the Messenger for Android cell phones. This should make it possible to send a message to an unlimited number of contacts. Provided they have previously registered for the newsletter with their telephone number.
Unlike traditional WhatsApp messages, newsletters will not be end-to-end encrypted. However, your phone number will be hidden from other contacts so that it cannot be viewed. The new function should probably be located in the status area. According to the report, it is still unclear whether it really listens to the name “Newsletter”. It could also be a code name.
Ban should prevent spam
WhatsApp had banned the sending of newsletters via Messenger in 2019 to stop the spread of spam and fake news. For this reason, the possibility of forwarding messages has also been restricted.
