Sword Art Online’s spin-off, Gun Gale Online, has finally announced its release date after six years of waiting.
An unexpected return
After 6 years of absence Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is getting a second season. Aniplex announced a release date via video announcement last March. The anime is scheduled for October 2024 in France on simulcast platform Crunchyroll.
As a reminder, This is not a sequel to the animated adaptation of the light novel “Sword Art Online”, but rather a spin-off. So prepare to have to put Kirito and Asuna aside. Like SAO, Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is based on a light novel by Sigsawa Keiichi and began in 2014 with the Kadokawa Edition. There are currently 13 volumes available. The plot takes place on the same timeline as the main saga, but this time focuses on the third featured game in the series: Gun Gale Online. It is a VRMMORPG, a virtual reality MMO based on a shooter. To sign up, players must wear a virtual reality headset that teleports their consciousness into an avatar. The game takes place in a pseudo-post-apocalyptic world where players can compete against each other in PVP or play PVE alone or in teams.
We follow the daily life of Kohiruimaki Karen, a teenager who feels uncomfortable in her own skin due to her height of 1.83 meters. She is often stared at and doesn’t feel comfortable around people. For this reason, she finds refuge in GGO (Gun Gale Online), offering her the opportunity to customize her appearance to her liking. For this reason, she decides to create a little female character who she calls LLENN. Little by little she gets to know people and develops a friendship that turns into a rivalry with another player: Pitohui. But just like LLENN, Pitohui also hides a dark side.
Who is behind this new season?
Studio 3Hz is responsible for this season. They are behind the adaptation of the first season of Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, but also the second season of Devil is a Part-timer. In production we find Masayuki Sakoiwho was already responsible for season 1, but also proved himself for Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious.
