Shortly after Larian released the official modding toolkit for Baldur’s Gate 3, one modder was quick to figure out how to unlock the developer mode that allows players to create custom levels, among other things. Now, almost as quickly, early looks at the first few levels that modders have been working on are starting to surface, including a version of Avernus.
If you’ve been staying out of the world, these modding tools are part of BG3’s Patch 7, which also includes a ton of other stuff, if not everything some Durge players want.

Taking advantage of the possibilities unlocked in level editing by modder Siegfre’s “BG3 Toolkit Unlocked,” a few other modders have begun sharing their early work on custom maps.
The most interesting reveal so far (thanks to Dexerto) is undoubtedly the custom build of Avernus made by Reddit user katszenBurger – you know, that’s where Karlach comes from. They shared some snapshots of the unfinished map, as well as a video showing Astarion running around the map, which you can check out below.
“I’m also planning a lava area, and maybe I can make the lake slightly more explorable (although it’s a pretty empty open area), but those are my ideas so far,” the modder wrote of the map, adding that it draws some inspiration from Elden Ring’s Caelid, and yes, you can tell. They also painted a picture of how such a map would come together in the toolkit’s editor, saying, “The skybox/atmosphere/shadows are globally controlled, and you can use their menus to configure scattering and fog effects etc… The mountains and clouds are meshes in this case. The mountains/buildings are the same meshes they use in the various Avernus scenes.”
This isn’t the only map they’ve attempted to make either, they’ve tried making a castle as their first project. After checking, I also found a post by another modder, Lotrich3, who has been busy making a picturesque little forest clearing and a boat, as you can see in this video.
“It looks like the unlocked editor is very promising for custom campaigns,” katszenBurger wrote in a comment on a Reddit post about the Citadel, “and I hope this means we’ll eventually get some full user-made DLC or new campaigns, like in the Skyrim modding scene.”
Are you impressed that Baldur’s Gate 3 modders have been able to create custom maps like this? What areas/locations would you like to see someone try next? Let us know below.
