After Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree stole The Witcher 3’s crown, one Blood and Wine developer said he would buy it just to “support the team”

You may have seen that Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree has taken the title of Metacritic’s highest-rated DLC after its reviews were released a few days ago. It surpassed The Witcher 3’s excellent Blood and Wine expansion to win that honor, and now developer CD Projekt has come up with a nice way to congratulate the new champion.

In fact, one of the key developers behind the DLC that was surpassed by Shadow of the Trees has said he’d go a step further and give Miyazaki and company a little financial support.

CD Projekt released a tweet through the official Witcher account, in which Pawel Sasko stated that he plans to buy Shadow of the Erdtree despite not having defeated the Elden Beast once. Sasko served as the lead quest designer for Blood and Wine, and since then he has also played a key role in Cyberpunk 2077 and its ongoing sequel.

“Congratulations to our friends at FromSoftware on the fantastic review of the Elden Ring expansion,” the developer wrote. “After 30 hours in The Lands Between, I still haven’t finished the base game but will be getting Shadow of the Erdtree to support the team.”

While it’s easy to roll your eyes at the inevitable PR feel of Sasko and CDPR’s tweets – which included some artwork of Geralt after defeating Mogh and some screenshots of CD Projekt employees preparing to play Shadow of War themselves – given the general mood of the industry in 2024, it’s nice to get this kind of mutual praise between developers every once in a while.

Helps you remember that, at the end of the day, we’re all in it because we love to play the game, even if the financial realities and cynicism that inevitably come with any career involving cash can, more often than not, get in the way of our playing.

Anyway, I’m not going to get all sentimental or philosophical anymore and blame it on writing this post in the middle of a Friday afternoon.
