Fallout 4’s next-gen update was released late last week, and well, a lot of people weren’t too impressed. While the initial backlash was largely due to technical issues or bugs, many PC players who have tried the update now appear to be looking for ways to restore the game to its pre-update state. Some titles quickly made their way to the top of the game’s Nexus Mods page.
If you’re just catching up on how things are going, while there are a lot of big complaints about Fallout 4’s next-gen update, those issues have either been fixed or hopefully will be fixed soon – like the fact that it’s temporarily unavailable to PlayStation Plus users Upgrade PS4 version to PS5 without charging. Meanwhile, on PC, as often happens with game updates, many of Fallout 4’s key mods were unavailable until the update, sparking the ire of those who were modding the game but hadn’t made a plan. Block their game updates.

As a result, we ended up launching two mods specifically designed to help users who installed the update replay pre-next-gen Fallout 4 games, and they topped the list of most downloaded Fallout 4 mods on Nexus Mods. Last week, though the update only arrived.
Among them are Bilago’s “STEAM – Skip Next-Gen update” and Zerratar’s “Fallout 4 Downgrader,” which have amassed more than 20,000 unique downloads in a matter of days or so.
How do they work? Well, the purpose of the former is to “trick Steam into thinking your game has been updated” by replacing the files used to track game updates with modified files. The latter fully restores your game to its pre-update version through an automated process, but I’m wary of it since it appears to require your Steam login credentials as part of the process.
Zerratar did try to address the issue in the mod’s description, writing: “It’s completely understandable to see that the app requires your Steam username and password to work, all I can say is that the username and password will not be used for For any other purpose than logging into Steam when downloading the software library, you will not be able to download it as it will need to verify your license to ensure you own the game.”
They added: “If you are concerned that you will find that it is used only for this purpose, please check the source code, you can also download the code yourself and run it this way.”
Of course, the other option is to wait and see if your mod will be updated – for some affected titles, including the Fallout 4 Script Expander, this process is either already underway or has already been completed. You can even enjoy the regular version of the game while playing.
Don’t worry, I’m sure it won’t kill you.
Sadly, the next-gen update also forced the release of Fallout: London to be delayed, but the highly anticipated Fallout 4 mod should be released soon.
