While the recent success of Amazon’s Fallout TV series has been a boon for all existing titles in the series, including Fallout 76, it’s also left many wondering when the next big Fallout game, Fallout 5, will actually arrive.

Even though Elder Scrolls 6 will apparently come out before Fallout 5, you can’t blame Fallout fans (new and old) for letting their imaginations run wild about the wasteland’s future. Especially considering Fallout 4 is almost a decade old now.

So, during a recent interview with Fallout 76 lead producer Bill LaCoste at a preview of the Skyrim expansion, I asked the developer where he thought 76 fits into the overall series right now, and specifically, whether its role is to help bridge the gap between Fallout 4 and Fallout 5.

“We have a long-term plan for 76, and I don’t think we’re really looking to bridge any gaps between games,” he told me, stressing that he’d leave Fallout 5 itself to Todd Howard to talk about when he’s ready. [Fallout] In this period [overall series] The timeline, and any future decisions about Fallout 5 will coexist with those games, just like the TV show.”

As for how the eventual release of Fallout 5 will affect the popularity of 76, he added: “I think we’ll have players constantly or continuously playing 76 because we still have players who played Fallout 4, Fallout 3, and even Fallout 2 and Fallout 1 because they were re-released, and they also play 76. I think even if Fallout 5 is released, it will be the same, of course people will play it, but I believe there will be a lot of people who keep coming back to 76 because [they’re] Just playing a game in the Fallout universe.”

Given that Fallout fans are famous for keeping the game alive and fresh long after release by modding it, it’s certainly not surprising that LaCoste believes some of those players will continue to return to 76 even after Fallout 5 comes along to delight us all. Even though I’m curious to see how quiet Appalachia will become after Fallout’s release.

In the same interview, we also asked LaCoste what the team behind 76 thought about Xbox boss Phil Spencer’s CAMP being destroyed a while ago, so be sure to read that if you’re curious.
