Animal Well is the work of one and the same person: Billy Basso, who has been working on it since 2017. The developer was supported by Dan Adelman, a former Xbox and Nintendo veteran who was responsible for the business and marketing side. The software is considered by many gamers to be “the revelation of the year”. The latter also takes part in the Golden Joystick Awards in the “Best PC Game of the Year” and “Best Indie Game” categories. The ceremony will take place on November 21st. Very fascinating gameplay
Animal Well is apparently very simple: it looks like a simple Metroidvania with pixel art scary. During an interview at IGNexplains Billy Basso: “Animal Well is that kind of game that doesn’t really communicate well why or how it’s special (…) It’s a game with secrets and hidden information, and I think that’s what makes it interesting to play, but it is a hard sell. “If it is like that, I can’t just show the best moments.”
Form aside, the content of the game is so good that you can’t say it isn’t exceptional. However, playing Animal Well for the first time can be confusing as the player is not given any guidance on controls or quests. But after you learn to control the “Jumping Bean” you play as, you understand that you have to solve puzzles to unlock areas or objects like a flute or frisbee. These “tools” also allow you to reach previously inaccessible areas. Be careful! The fauna and flora of this pixelated environment is full of creatures that aren’t always comfortable.
As the adventure progresses, you will delve deeper and deeper into the history of Animal Well. That means there are several “layers”. Sometimes we may think the story is over, even though it isn’t!
