The Boys doesn’t go far enough for you? Then you should keep an eye on the next film adaptation by comic book author Garth Ennis: The comic Crossed is now to be adapted into a film – and it is definitely not for the faint of heart!

After Preacher and The Boys it’s now Crossed’s turn

How The Hollywood Reporter reported that Ennis has already written a script for Crossed, to which the indie studio Six Studios has now secured the rights. The project is expected to cost only two to three million US dollars in total. However, depending on the director that is brought in for Crossed, the budget could increase.

Production of Crossed is scheduled to begin in fall 2024while there is currently no information about the cast or the planned cinema release. After Preacher and The Boys, Crossed is the third comic by the author to be made into a film – although of course various Punisher adaptations have also repeatedly taken up elements from his work.

Is Crossed too harsh even for fans of The Boys?

If you’re wondering what Crossed is all about: The original Crossed comics consisted of ten issues published between 2008 and 2010. Since then, the franchise has grown to over 200 more issues, with other artists working on it besides Ennis, such as Watchmen creator Alan Moore.

The action takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which a virus turns people into so-called Crossed: the infected give in to their worst and most reprehensible urges, which then roam the country murdering and raping.

Crossed does not shy away from the explicit depiction of (partly sexualized) violence, in which women and children are not spared.

By the way: What an adaptation of Crossed could look like was already shown in the Taiwanese horror film The Sadness from 2021. It follows a very similar premise to Crossed and is comparably hard, brutal and cruel.

Crossed cannot be recommended for every comic book fan and it will of course be exciting to see how faithful the film adaptation turns out to be. However, the success of The Boys could well have confirmed Garth Ennis’ decision not to hold back when it comes to his script for the planned film.

There are already some meaningful reactions to the news on Reddit, for example in the Zombies-Reddit. Der User CG1991 suspects, for example, that the film adaptation definitely cannot do justice to its original. Omnio667 writes again:

Oh my God. [Crossed] should not be allowed anywhere near the TV or film industry.

This is what the author thinks: As a big fan of Garth Ennis, I would describe myself as being hardened. After all, Preacher, Punisher and of course The Boys are also pretty serious. But Crossed goes too far even for me. Ennis is absolutely uncompromising in Crossed and artist Jacen Burrows consistently shows this. Too consistent for my taste and maybe even for good taste.

Nevertheless, I can understand that Crossed has its appeal amidst all the brutality and cruelty. Ennis and other Crossed authors describe cynical and bitter stories that go further than other representatives of the genre. There is no hope, no last-minute rescue and definitely no happy ending. If you want to know how brutal a zombie apocalypse would really be, you can at least take a cautious look at Crossed.

If you want to know when and how the fifth and final season of The Boys will continue, you will find out in the links above.
