Game news After The Matrix Awakens, Unreal Engine 5 has a new free demo, and it’s throwing!
After surprising everyone late last year with the free experience The Matrix Awakens, which allows players to roam freely in the world re-imagined from the ground up by the Wachowski sisters, Unreal Engine 5 is taking advantage of the state of Unreal event to unveil a new playable demo.
Lyra: A Fortnite-style shooter
Unveiled in 2020, Unreal Engine 5, the development engine that once gave us the amazing experience of The Matrix Awakens, returns to the forefront of State of Unreal today. During this conference, the engine revealed the launch of a brand new production that can be played by everyone: Lyra.
This new demo, available for free and running on Unreal Engine 5, is a multiplayer title heavily inspired by Splitgate or Fortnite. This new experience not only offers frenzied matches, but also reveals compelling graphics and is fully customizable. In fact, like The Matrix Awakens, budding developers can enter the game settings to tinker with the lighting or even the location of the different platforms, and they can do it in real time.

A free engine available to everyone
Let’s use this first piece of good news to unveil a second one: Unreal Engine 5, Epic Games’ in-house engine, has been officially released. What does that mean ? That aspiring players and developers can go to the engine’s official website to download it for free and make their own games or experiments. Also note that all studios around the world can rely on this brand new engine.
Six games are currently using this engine, four of which belong to the Xbox Studios brand. These are STALKER 2: The Heart of Chornobyl, whose development seems to have resumed, but also the Bethesda Redfall game, the highly anticipated Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II and the next production of The Coalition, the Dads of the Gears of War license . Note that the great Black Myth: Wukong also uses this engine, as does the next Tomb Raider (which has just been announced).
