The new strategy game Age of Wonders 4 will soon lure you back into its fantasy world
You have less than five months until your friends don’t see you again for weeks: On May 2, 2023, Age of Wonders 4, the next turn-based strategy chunk, will be released. In the first trailer above you get a glimpse of the fantasy scenario, we’ll tell you the most important innovations in this news.
Incidentally, fans had to wait nine years for the announcement; it’s been so long since part 3 came out. In the meantime, the series took a detour into the science fiction genre with Age of Wonders: Planetfall:

The biggest innovations of Age of Wonders 4
Developer Triumph Studios promises that Part 4 will offer more variety and long-term fun – by copying a few tricks from publisher Paradox Interactive’s games. So there’s the gameplay now numerous small story events
In Age of Wonders 4 you are again active on two game levels.
This fits perfectly with innovation number two: For the first time in the history of the series, you can be completely free of people’s specifications your own faction including main heroes create. A corresponding editor allows you to combine body shapes, social characteristics and arcane powers. According to the announcement, a multitude of empires is possible (Hello, Stellaris!), “from the cannibal halfling clan to the mystical moon elves”.

The maps in the game in Age of Wonders 4 viz procedurally generated and are supposed to offer unlimited supplies – you can set the parameters yourself when you start a new game, see Civilization. There is also talk of mod support.

Age of Wonders 4 is also playfully divided into two spheres: The worldmap focuses on city management and the movement of your hero characters, who at the same time represent armies of fantasy creatures. With them you collect resources or fight the warriors of AI opponents and other players.
The turn-based battles are reminiscent of Age of Wonders 4, but apparently allow even more troops to accumulate at the same time.
When two armies meet, it happens tactically challenging battles on separate hex maps. This can also involve the siege of cities, but in any case your heroes will support the units with spells. Because the main characters are all powerful magicians, whose spells sometimes have an impact on the global view or affect the appearance and skills of the soldiers.
Age of Wonders will be released simultaneously for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 2nd, 2023.
