Nvidia has announced a new lineup of the so-called "Geforce-powered laptops" including new graphics cards. A total of over a hundred devices from various manufacturers are therefore equipped with the latest GTX and RTX graphics cards, the latter in the form of the RTX 2000 Super series.

Together with Nvidia's Max-Q technology, these should be significantly more efficient than their predecessors. With DLSS 2.0, Nvidia also promises a leap in performance or longer battery runtimes. Does this make AI calculation a silver bullet for notebooks?

Better efficiency with DLSS 2.0

Nvidia recently introduced Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) in version 2.0. The basic idea behind this is to use AI-based calculation to achieve a comparable or even better image quality with a lower resolution than with a higher resolution without the help of AI.

This enables higher fps while maintaining the same quality – or the saving of resources when the fps are limited, which means that the battery is used less.

According to Nvidia, laptop batteries in the interaction between DLSS 2.0 and BatteryBoost technology last up to 20 percent longer during gaming. However, independent tests will only show how realistic the information is in practice.

What new mobile graphics cards are there?

Overall there is a new GTX and two RTX models for laptops in two variants. In the overview we compare the latter with their respective non-super counterparts (via videocardz).

What is Nvidia's Max-Q? Nvidia is a design that is geared towards energy efficiency. In practice, it usually means slightly lower clock speeds of the GPU compared to regular models without Max-Q addition.

The (game) performance drops a bit, but on the other hand this also applies to the waste heat. Appropriate notebooks can therefore potentially be flatter and / or quieter.

The term Max-Q is borrowed from the aerospace industry. It describes the spatial and temporal point at which the aerodynamic load on a flying object moving in areas of variable density is highest. (Source: Wikipedia)
