Creative Assembly is returning to the world of shooters. After the relative success of Alien: Isolation, Total War Studios revealed that it is working on a new multiplayer shooter titled hyena.
We know this project has been in development since 2018, and Creative Assembly occasionally makes fun of it. But now, the game has been officially announced.
Hyena is a three-player heist game where you compete with four other squads to steal pop culture memorabilia. If this sounds like an unusual setup, it might be helpful to know that all billionaires are leaving Earth for Mars.
In doing so, they destroyed the Earth, thanks to the zero-gravity technology they used for their ships. The broken, drifting slum is now known as the Stain, and billionaires are looting it to take loot from Earth’s past and store it in mall-like Plunderships.
All of the hyena’s heists take place in the space of the aforementioned Plunderships – a sandbox setting full of nostalgic merchandise. These ships are littered with traps, sirens, and AI enemies defending it. Driving each Plundership requires more than shooting skills, as you use their intricate designs against other teams.
When the shooting happens, everything will be in zero gravity. You’ll be able to pick your own character from a cast of anachronistic characters, which we got a glimpse of in the trailer.
Creative Assembly wants Hyenas to be to multiplayer shooters what Alien: Isolation is to horror games. Developers are well aware of the huge risks of launching a multiplayer shooter these days and want players to get involved as soon as possible.
That’s why it now offers alpha registration. Anyone over the age of 18 can sign up, but you will also need to sign an NDA. The closed alpha is only available on PC, and initially only in North America and Europe. It can be extended to platforms and regions.
Hyena is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S in 2023.
