The platforms are growing together again. After years of having to spread ourselves across umpteen launchers because EA, Activision, Ubisoft and Co. preferred to make their own platforms big instead of promoting Steam, we are now seeing exactly the opposite trend: More and more large developers and publishers are returning to Valves Platform.
So also in the case of Call of Duty. The latest Modern Warfare 2 already made it into the headlines with the clear announcement that both MW2 and Warzone 2 are running on Steam again. Battle.net is therefore only optional. Now Activision is cleaning up its own backroom and is also releasing some older CoDs on Steam.
You can now buy the following three games via Steam:
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019) turned out to be an absolute gold goose a few years ago: After a rather experimental Black Ops 4, fans got all the things they love for CoD here. A strong campaign, massive gunplay, real technical advances and a lot of balance issues at release. The big catch was the release of Warzone as part of Modern Warfare in early 2020. The game is still worth playing for the campaign alone.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Solo Campaign and Multiplayer Test Video
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War brought CoD into the 80s at the end of 2020 and offers a surprisingly complex and good campaign, while the multiplayer fell by the wayside, especially technically. Again: for the campaign, it’s still worth it today.
- Call of Duty Vanguard turned out to be a disappointment for Activision because the WWII scenario in late 2021 just wasn’t what many fans were hoping for. That’s why the game starts with rather poor Steam ratings. Still, in our eyes, Vanguard is a solid shooter experience, in both single and multiplayer.
All three games currently cost 30 dollars each on Steam, so they are reduced by half. This is still a decent price for games that are sometimes four years old, but Activision rarely reduces its own CoD games by more than half.
Our tip: Modern Warfare from 2019 is most worthwhile for 30 dollars. Especially with regard to the campaign of Modern Warfare 2, the prehistory is still worthwhile today.
With that is Incidentally, Black Ops 4 is the only CoD, which is still not available on Steam. Probably because Activision doesn’t support multiplayer anymore anyway.
