alone in the dark It’s back, this time starring big names like Jodie Comer and David Harbor.
The duo will play the two protagonists, which you will control once the game launches October 25. Harbor will play detective Edward Carnby, while Comer will play Emily Hartwood.
For those who don’t know, Alone in the Dark was the original survival horror title before a more recognizable genre juggernaut like Resident Evil came along and stole everyone’s hearts. It has received several sequels and reboots over the years, to mixed reception. This time, it’s THQ that brings it back for another try.
The game is a third-person survival horror game where you control detectives Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood as they delve into various supernatural horrors. You’ll be able to switch between each character, just like in Resident Evil 2. It remains to be seen whether the characters are fully self-contained, and whether we’ll get back the awesome switching systems we’ve seen in true classic survival horror games.
One aspect of the new Alone in the Dark that might overwhelm you a bit is how it looks. Of course, the facial capture of the main characters looks good (you hope so, given the talent they hired for this). But the gameplay itself does seem a bit wonky. However, a shiny engine doesn’t guarantee quality: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Redfall look great on your overpriced PC, but are boring to play, right?
Particularly interesting is the timing of Alone in the Dark. We’re still in the midst of a true horror renaissance in gaming, with many studios looking back to the past for inspiration and IP they can bring back to the forefront. Resident Evil is the obvious one, but you also have Dead Space, System Shock and a selection of exciting retro-inspired indie games like Signalis!
Maybe this is the perfect time to bring back Alone in the Dark. If you’re curious about that, you can download the game’s prologue right now, which covers some of the narrative leading up to the actual game and introduces everything you need to know about the characters.
