Amazon cancelled the “Lord of the Rings” game due to a dispute with the Chinese company Tencent.
According to a Bloomberg report, online role-playing games based on The Lord of the Rings are no longer being developed.
Since 2019, the game has been developed in cooperation with Amazon Game Studios and China-based Leyou Technology Holdings Co., Ltd. The latter was eventually acquired by Tencent in December last year.
People familiar with the matter said that the game has been cancelled due to the failure of contract negotiations between Amazon and Tencent.
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Bloomberg that after the acquisition of Leyou, it currently “cannot obtain the conditions to continue using the title.”
The spokesperson said: “We like the “Lord of the Rings” IP, and we are disappointed that we will not bring this game to our customers.” (Thanks to resetera).
The Amazon team responsible for the game will move to other projects.
Amazon Game Studios announced a free MMO game based on “Lord of the Rings” in July 2019.
The Amazon Game Studios (AGS) team working with Leyou and Athlon Games includes experienced developers who have participated in the development of EverQuest, Destiny, Planetside, World of Warcraft, Defiance, Rift and other MMOs.
The co-developed title will be released on PCs and consoles, and has nothing to do with the original Amazon TV series based on “Lord of the Rings”, which will make its debut through Amazon Prime.
The content of the game has never been shared, but it is based on the world depicted in the trilogy.
