Earlier this year, it was revealed that the next installment in the Tomb Raider franchise was finally in development. That’s all we know, though, except that Crystal Dynamic’s proprietary engine is being switched over to Unreal Engine 5.
Brand new details emerged today, however, with Amazon Games revealing that it will be partnering with Crystal Dynamics as its publisher for its upcoming Tomb Raider game. Previously, Square Enix was the publisher of the Lara Croft games until it sold Crystal Dynamics and various IPs including Lara Croft to the Embracer Group.
Information about Amazon Games’ involvement in the new Lara Croft game was announced via a joint press release from the team. “Amazon Gaming is committed to bringing players the highest quality games from the best developers across a variety of platforms and genres, and we are honored to have the opportunity to partner with this legendary developer and franchise,” said Amazon’s vice president of gaming. Christopher Hartmann. “Our team is very excited to be working with the talented and visionary team at Crystal Dynamics to bring players around the world a new chapter in the Lara Croft saga.”
Crystal Dynamics studio head Scot Amos then shared: “We were looking for something transformative, and through Amazon Games we found the possibility of a team that shared our creative vision, aspirations and values for the Lara Croft universe.” He continued, “They are uniquely positioned to rewrite publishing and develop together, and we’re eager to forge this new path together, starting with the biggest and best Tomb Raider game yet!”
Tomb Raider was a prolific franchise conceived in 1996, with 20 games made around Lara Croft. So, as you can imagine, many fans are hoping that the latest game in the beloved series will be a good one.
Amazon Games has begun to flesh out its list of published games, with MMORPGs Lost Ark and New World being the team’s first titles. Due to their success, the upcoming Tomb Raider game will be its first single-player narrative title.
