Phoebe Waller-Bridge, best known as the creator of the Emmy-winning series Fleabag, is apparently at the helm of a new tomb Raider exhibit.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge is developing a Tomb Raider series for Amazon as part of a larger deal with the retailer and streaming company. The company produces multiple projects. According to “The Hollywood Reporter” sources, Waller-Bridge intends to write the script for the series, but he has no plans to star in the show. The writer and actor also serves as an executive producer on the series, along with former Amazon comedy chief Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt.
There are no further details beyond the project, so it’s clearly early days. This isn’t the only live-action adaptation of the classic series, with the 2001 film starring Angelina Jolie and the 2018 film starring Alicia Vikander. The latter is somewhat meant to be a live-action reboot following the success of 2013’s video game reboot.
This isn’t the only Tomb Raider project Amazon has been involved with, either. It was announced last month that Amazon Gaming would be releasing the next game in the series, with Crystal Dynamics still in charge of development, though it’s unlikely we’ll see anything from that game just yet. Speaking at the time of the announcement, Crystal Dynamics studio head Scot Amos said: “We were looking for something transformative, and through Amazon Games we found a team that shared our creative vision, aspirations and values for the world of Lara Croft. May range of sex.”
Notably, this will be the first Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider game not to be published by Square Enix. Last year, the Final Fantasy developer sold numerous companies and intellectual properties to the Embracer Group, including Tomb Raider and Crystal Dynamics.
