A fantasy epic like “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” costs a lot of money. Amazon is now getting these high costs back from you, because the Prime subscription is getting a hefty price increase.
- It doesn’t matter whether you want to see “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” or not: the Prime subscription will be more expensive.
- The high costs of the fantasy series are likely to be the reason for the latest price increase.
- However, if you only want to get Prime for “The Rings of Power”, you can theoretically even stream for free.
Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is the most expensive series of all time. Each episode of the first season is said to have swallowed up $ 60 million – and it shows. You have never seen Middle-earth in such a magnificent and detailed way. Subscribers get a lot for their money here.

It is hardly surprising that Amazon wants to recover the invested costs directly. A price increase is the consequence, which officially comes into force on September 15, 2022. Only the new prices can be found on the Amazon website: 8.99 dollars per month, 89.90 dollars per year.
The 30-day trial period remains in place, so anyone who wants to see “The Rings of Power” for free still has the option. Nevertheless, an increase of 20 dollars for the annual subscription is steep. Of course, Amazon did not choose the point in time for the increase at random.
Hardly any series fan will want to miss “The Rings of Power” and then the choice will probably fall on the annual subscription despite the price increase, since in the long run it will still save more money than with the monthly subscription.
However, one should keep in mind that “The Rings of Power” was already completely released after 7 weeks, so the free period and another month are enough to follow the entire first season. If you buy a Prime subscription just for the “Lord of the Rings” series, you can do without an annual subscription.
A 2nd season of “The Rings of Power” has already been confirmed, but it will hardly be released before autumn 2023 and by then you may be able to test Prime again for 30 days free of charge.
Regardless of “The Rings of Power” and Prime Video, the Prime price increase is of course annoying for all Prime customers or users of Amazon Music. Amazon Prime now costs as much as a Disney+ subscription, but whether Amazon’s service offers more value for the money is up to you to decide.
