The Flash Forest project aims to plant a billion trees within three years with the help of drones. The aircraft offer numerous advantages over traditional methods.

A Canadian team of scientists and engineers wants to use technology to fight climate change. They have developed a method of reforestation using multicopters that offers clear advantages over conventional planting methods.

Sea Project details 80 percent of costs could be saved and trees could be planted ten times faster. In practice, this looks like this:

Special drones are equipped with a pneumatic launching device that plants pods with pre-germinated seeds, fertilizer and roots at the optimal soil depth.

After sowing, a second drone sprays the seedlings with nutrients such as nitrogen, while a mapping drone monitors the plants’ progress. This method is said to use significantly less water and lead to faster results, says Flash Forest.

The complex interplay between mapping and exploring possible planting areas and the actual sowing is handled by specially developed software. The drones also record general data on the state of the ecosystem they are flying over.

In 2021, native trees such as white and red pine, coastal Douglas fir and hemlock were planted in Canada. Other plant species native to North America are now to be added to offset carbon emissions. Multicopters are taking on more and more tasks to make our everyday lives easier.
