After the great success of the Zen 2 architecture with the Ryzen (Threadripper) 3000 processors for the desktop, many wondered how the 7 nm CPUs would perform in laptop format (APUs).
The first models of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 with the eight-core Ryzen 9 4900HS have now been handed over to the international trade press for testing. We summarize the voices of the experts – and they are pretty much in agreement.
Heise: »AMD outclasses Intel«
As the colleagues from Heise.de report, even Intel's current flagship for laptops, the Core i9 9980HK, sees no country against the AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS. The Ryzen scores 4,200 points in a multi-core comparison in Cinebench R20.
Both the 9980HK and the somewhat weaker 9880H can do it at best 3,300 points
. In addition, the Intel processors are designed for a thermal power loss (TDP) of 45 watts, while the 4900HS is specified for 35 watts.
der8auer: »Now Intel really has (even more) problems«
The well-known German extreme overclocker and Youtuber novel "der8auer" Hartung is enthusiastic about the Ryzen 4900HS. In his tests, he came to a similar result to Heise.
The 4900HS scores 4,120 points (multi-core) in Cinebench R20 and thus clearly outperforms the 9980HK (3,578 points). Even better: the Ryzen APU is even closer to the desktop flagship Core i9 9900K (4,516 points).
Even in a single-core comparison the 4900HS is slightly ahead of the 9980HK (478 versus 471 points, 9900K: 493 points).
Hardware Unboxed: »Step aside Intel, the days of your laptop dominance are over«
Hardware Unboxed tries to relate the performance of the 4900HS a little more precisely and adjusts the power consumption of the Intel processors. At 35 watts, the 9880H only scores 2,650 points in Cinebench R20 (4900HS: 4,104). The Blender and HandBrake can also take the 4900HS to the top.
While the 4900HS is far from winning in all tests, on average, it clearly sets itself apart from the competition. Hardware Unboxed therefore speaks of one of the most impressive launches that they have ever experienced across generations.
Ryzen 4900HS not AMD's flagship
In addition, it should be said that the Ryzen 9 4900HS (3.0 / 4.3 GHz) is not AMD's top model for laptops. This honor is due to the Ryzen 9 4900H (3.3 / 4.4 GHz), which is designed for a TDP up to 54 watts and therefore clocks a bit higher. So far, however, there are no tests available.
One can also look forward to Intel's answer in the form of the Comet Lake-H processors and the new flagship Core i9 10980HK be that should clock with up to 5.3 GHz.
