AMD surprise? New Ryzen hardware could appear soon

AMD, Hardware, Ryzen, surprise

AMD's Ryzen 3000 generation has been well received by gamers and the trade press alike - and could soon have youngsters. AMD's Ryzen 3000 generation has been well received by gamers and the trade press alike – and could soon have youngsters.

So far, the cheapest Ryzen 3000 CPU with Zen-2 architecture in the form of the very popular Ryzen 5 3600 has cost around 170 euros, but rumors are changing (via computer base).

Two entry-level CPUs with four cores: Strictly speaking, it is about the following two entry-level models, which, in contrast to the Ryzen 5 3600, are to have four instead of six cores at a lower price.

  • Ryzen 3 3100: four cores / eight threads, 3.9 GHz turbo clock, 65 watts TDP
  • Ryzen 3 3300X: four cores / eight threads, 4.3 GHz turbo clock, 65 watts TDP

B550 motherboards with PCI Express 4.0: In addition, new AM4 mainboards from the 500 chipset series are under discussion. Since the release of Ryzen 3000 in July 2019, there are only very expensive models with the X570 chipset. The B550 boards could make the PCI Express 4.0 graphics interface, which was first introduced with AMD's 500 chipsets, available a little cheaper.

We used benchmarks with AMD's Radeon RX 5000 series, which is the only GPU series that so far supports PCIe 4.0, to find out more about the difference between PCI Express 4.0 and the currently widespread PCI Express 3.0 standard in games:

How expensive will the new AMD hardware be?

The Twitter user Komachi, known for leaks, already gives prices in US dollars for the Ryzen 3 3300X and the Ryzen 3 3100:

The information would fit the current Ryzen 3000 models including the Ryzen 3 3200G with older Zen + architecture and integrated graphics unit, but without the virtual core doubling. However, the new models would have one difficult stand against AMD's own six-core CPUs of the previous generations.

The Ryzen 5 1600 currently costs around 100 euros, the Ryzen 5 2600 is around 120 euros. The Ryzen 3 1200 without the virtual core doubling is also a particularly cheap four-core competitor, which is in the fresh new edition with 12nm production in the range of 60 euros.

Should the new CPUs really appear, it is also conceivable that they are primarily intended for the OEM market and for complete systems instead of for retail sale.

Prices for the new B550 mainboards: Here sums in the range of 70 to 150 euros are obvious. On the one hand because of the costs for the predecessor model B450, on the other hand with a view to the price differentiation from the X570 chipset.

When should the new AMD hardware be released?

The rumor mill does not yet have a release date for the new CPUs, in the case of mainboards mid-June is the release period.

The B550 motherboards should also be compatible with the new Ryzen 4000 processors, which are due to appear at the end of the year – as long as the corona crisis doesn't mess up AMD's schedule.
