We’re halfway through the year, and to mark the occasion, Metacritic is highlighting the highest-rated games of 2023 so far.
As much as I don’t want to think about it for the sake of my own sanity, it’s July, which means we’ve had six full months of video game time. Obviously, not all games are amazing, but there are plenty of incredible ones out there – and Metacritic shows us the top 20 highest-rated games released between January 1st and June 30th. As Metacritic notes, “Games are ranked by their Metascores (before rounding) as of June 28, 2023 and must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.”

Kingdom Tears consistently tops the charts and is one of OpenCritic’s highest rated games of all time. Other games, like Metroid Prime Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake, didn’t come as a huge surprise either, since they’re already well-regarded titles.
Metacritic also notes that “multi-game collections and ports of newly released games released on other platforms in recent years are excluded” unless they are significantly different from earlier releases (e.g., Metroid Prime, which underwent a major visual modification).
You might also notice that there are some multiplatform entries listed under PS5 – Metacritic writes that it chose to “only list the version that received the most total number of reviews (usually but not always the PS5 or PS4 version)”. As Destructoid points out, that makes Hi-Fi Rush the only Xbox Series X game listed, but hey, it’s a pretty good game.
