Here’s a new announcement from PlayStation that should make a difference for affected gamers and might convince others to take the plunge.
Sony actually had some pretty good news to announce to owners of a PlayStation VR 2, a VR headset with excellent technical specifications but a very poor catalog of games and a price that is too high for its rather relative usefulness. A year after its release, the product is finally attracting attention, with a PC adapter coming soon. Better late than never?
PlayStation VR 2 is finally officially compatible on PC
Unfortunately, the PlayStation VR 2, launched last year, failed to wow the public. The fault lies in a very limited catalog of games on the PS5 (despite the regular offer of VR-exclusive titles via PS Plus) and a $600 entry ticket that puts more than one off. The helmet is still of very good quality, but that was obviously not enough. This announcement of a PC adapter (unfortunately not free either) could still save the situation, if it is not already too late.
This means that the PlayStation VR headset can finally be officially compatible with PC, without any complicated manipulation, via an adapter specially designed for the occasion. This will be available from August 7th. This will allow you to take advantage of SteamVR’s much larger catalog of virtual reality games, including the absolute masterpiece H alf-Life: Alyx. However, this adapter will cost a whopping $59.99. A total of $660 for a VR headset compatible with PC and PS5. A certain investment, which is therefore not suitable for all budgets.
Adapter and compatible PC sold separately
In the article by Blog From PlayStation dedicated to the announcement of this adapter, we can also see the PC configuration required to take advantage of the PSVR 2. The recommended minimum is no flash. However, keep in mind that virtual reality is very demanding and that a much more muscular machine is therefore preferable. But again, not everyone can afford it.
- Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit / Windows 11 64-bit
- Processor: Intel Core i5-7600 / AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (Zen 2 architecture or higher required)
- RAM: 8 GB or more
- Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 or better (Turing architecture or higher required) – NVIDIA RTX or AMD Radeon RX 5500 / AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT or better recommended (For best performance, PlayStation recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 and above or a Radeon RX 6600 XT)
- DisplayPort: 1.4 (a DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort is required)
- USB: Direct connection only
- Bluetooth: 4.0 or higher
Remember that the relative commercial failure of the PlayStation VR 2 forced Sony to close its London studio dedicated exclusively to the development of VR games. Will the possibility of using it on PC be enough to relaunch the virtual reality machine? Only time will tell.
