Sonic the Hedgehog is definitely in the spotlight right now. Surprisingly, it’s not the future open world episode that is in the news, but the amazing RPG that was released on DS in 2008.
Since his (many) failures never seem to be able to stop him, Sonic tackled the role play in 2008 thanks to the good support from specialist Bioware. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood actually proposed marrying the speed of the supersonic mascot with a rhythm that is very different from turn-by-turn combat typical of the genre. Released on DS, the synthesis will undoubtedly not have been unanimous, but Sonic Chronicles will at least be able to mark the ghosts thanks to its universe that mixes 2D backgrounds with 3D characters.
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Secret
From the first few seconds of the adventure, the introduction focused closely on the battles, all in 3D. And yet! A 2D version of this famous opening film was developed to echo the cult sequence on a particular Sonic CD. Hitherto unpublished, it has just been unveiled to the public for the first time thanks to moderator Jonathan Cooper:
Given the result, which is much more pleasant on an artistic level, the ex-bioware who is now moderating for Naughty Dog is surprised by the decisions that led them to prefer the sequence we know to introduce Sonic Chronicles The Dark Brotherhood:
This fantastic 2D sequence was inexplicably cut by SEGA who used the same music in the final version. It was a project that Joel MacMillan and Nick DiLiberto carried out with passion. Nick left video games to pursue a solo career as a 2D filmmaker in Japan.
What do you think of SEGA’s decisions? Would you have rather discovered this sequence than the one for Sonic Chronicles? Let us know your 2D opinions in the comments below.
