Android 13 is here. Google has approved the new version for publication. We reveal what innovations it offers and which cell phones and tablets will receive the Tiramisu update.
Android 12 is history! Because Google has released the successor Android 13, also known as Android T or Tiramisu, for its Pixel phones. In the course of the year, smartphones from other manufacturers will also receive the update.
We summarize everything you need to know about the new Android release.
What innovations does Android 13 offer?
With the next Android version, Google wants to offer you even more customization options. Furthermore, Google wants to improve the way different Android devices work together, and there are also improvements in the “Privacy and Security” area.
Revised Permissions
The system permissions have been revised and are now more detailed. This means that if you want to share pictures with an app, it no longer needs access to the entire phone memory, but thanks to a new interface only has access to the photos you want to share.
Not only cell phones with Android 13 will benefit from this innovation, but also older smartphones that are still running Android 11 or Android 12. Google integrates these innovations in the May update for Google Play services.
Material You is stretched
The Material You theme introduced with Android 12 is being expanded to include third-party icons as well.
New notification features
With the new operating system, you can decide which apps are allowed to send notifications and which are not. So far, all apps had the right to do so ex works.
Language can be set individually for each app
You can also choose the language in which an app is run. This can be different from the system language.
Optimization for tablets
In addition, Google is making tablet optimizations based on Android 12L. Among other things, multitasking should be easier and Android tablets should respond better to pen inputs.
Bluetooth LE Audio and Spatial Audio
Android 13 supports Bluetooth LE audio function. This is intended to reduce power consumption on the one hand and increase the quality of the sound on the other.
Spatial audio is also coming to your cell phone with Android 13. Assuming a supported headset, the function should offer you a kind of spatial sound and thus pull you deeper into the action – for example in mobile games.
Stream apps on Chromebook
In the future, you should also be able to react to incoming chat messages directly on your cell phone from your Chromebook. According to Google, you can stream your messaging apps to the Chromebook via Bluetooth.
New bedtime mode
The bedtime mode is enhanced with a dark theme and a dimmed background image. So it should be easier on your eyes when you wake up in the night and take a quick look at your cell phone.
Automatic clipboard clearing
The clipboard should be automatically deleted with Android 13 after a certain time. This is how Google wants to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access.
What is the nickname for Android 13?
Since Android 10, epithets in new Android versions are history. However, the tradition lives on within Google. The new Android 13 should be called “Tiramisu” on Google.
Will there be Android 13L?
Google released a version of Android 12 specifically optimized for tablets called Android 12L. Will there also be such a “sub-version” of Android 13? No! Google has not officially commented on this, but Android expert Mishaal Rahman points out that Android 13 has API level 33, while API level 34 is already set for the next Android Release “U” (Android 14) reserved. This makes the release of a minor version less likely.
