Streamer, pro gamer, cloud gaming – these are now completely common terms in the gaming world that have become established almost internationally. The French government, however, has something against it.
France would like to protect the French language. That, at least, is being given as justification for a move that will ban government employees from using gaming anglicisms in official correspondence. The Ministry of Culture, which is involved in the process, told AFP that the video game sector is full of anglicisms that could act as a “barrier to understanding” for non-gamers.
Whether it really works that way… you don’t know. The pro-gamer now becomes “joueur professionnel”, the streamer a “joueur-animateur en direct”. Cloud gaming will become “jeu video en nuage” and e-sports will be called “jeu video de competition” in official French.
However, the ban is only binding in official documents for government employees. The whole thing shouldn’t matter to the average Otto player.
